Extra info:
The VW Golf Mk1 model started life in 1974, with the Gti following in 1976. VW wanted to improve its young image and to go racing it needed to build 5000 cars for homologation (FISA Group1), it wanted to "race on Sunday, sell on Monday". In August 1979, the 5-speed gearbox became standard and in 1980 the "facelift" with larger rear lights was launched. In 1982 the 1.6l engine was replaced with the 1.8l, providing about the same power, but the extra torque makes it even more fun to drive. Production of the Gti ended in 1983 with a total of +300000, most of which ended up crashing or being heavily transformed.
This beautiful example of the Gti "facelift" is the last version of the Mk1 Gti. With a curb weight of only 810kg and 110 HP, it became a trendsetting "hot hatchback". Rockstars and racing drivers had a Gti as daily car. The Gti replaced sports- and exotic cars, just because it was so cool. The Gti was/is useable for racing or family fun.
Did you know that both James Hunt and Jeremy Clarckson own(ed) a white Gti? This is your opportunity to join that club!
